Unlock Learning 1:1 Initial Programme.

  • Do you worry about your child because they struggle with reading and writing, and would you love to help them get over that struggle?
  • Maybe you dream about hearing them read confidently. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they enjoyed reading books with you?
  • Imagine how great it would be to see them being proud of their writing or spelling and how it would feel to celebrate together as they progress through reading schemes or phonics levels, write more and spell previously ‘impossible’ words?
  • Perhaps the vision of your child being more confident and enthusiastic about reading, writing and spelling is something you are longing to come true.

It’s heart breaking seeing your child struggle.  Longing to help them but not knowing how.  Trying every which way to help them learn and study but finding that nothing seems to help.  Watching them withdraw or misbehave and feeling powerless to help.

During my 20 years as a primary school teacher, I’d always been drawn to the boys and girls in my class who were labelled ‘naughty’ or ‘lazy’.  I worried about the quiet, anxious children and the ones who didn’t want to be at school.

Hearing children refer to themselves as ‘stupid’ or ‘useless’ broke my heart.  I knew that deep down, they wanted to learn, they longed to be able to read and write like their peers.  However, because they struggled so much it became easier to be disruptive or act out rather than sit and struggle day in and day out.

I was determined to find a way to help them and started researching.

I came across Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and got very excited as I realised that it might hold the answer. I studied with a top practitioner, paying particular attention as to how this applied to children with learning difficulties and especially dyslexia.  I blended my teaching skills and experience with this new-found knowledge.  I was stunned at the results.

I watched as these youngsters transformed from children who believed they would never read or write properly, into children who were happy, confident readers, many of whom also enjoyed writing.  Most importantly of all they re-gained their self-esteem – something they had lost in their belief that they were stupid.

I’ve spent over fifteen years researching, practising and refining this process, a blend of 26 years teaching experience and Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques, into a form that is fun, effective and makes a real difference to a child’s ability to read, write, spell and learn.

The result is my Unlock Learning Approach

  • This approach will positively transform your child’s experience of reading and spelling.
  • It will help them to have a more positive attitude towards literacy and learning.
  • It unlocks potential, rapidly accelerates reading ability, improves spelling and boosts confidence in writing.
  • The Unlock Learning Approach raises self-esteem and self-belief whilst removing anxiety and frustration.
  • Your child will start to enjoy literacy and you’ll be relieved that they are able to read and write more easily.

How It Works

Part 1:  Find and remove the Issues that are holding your child back

Dyslexic students don’t experience text the way others do. When they look at a page the letters might blur or disappear or move around. Usually there are one or two specific things like this which make reading or writing extremely difficult for them. Each child is different so we must find out exactly what your child is dealing with before we can help them.

I’ll find out what it’s like for your child when they look at text and the precise reason, they’re struggling to read and/ or spell. Once I know what the problem is I’ll be able to help them to stop it happening and they’ll start reading and spelling much more easily. If they experience moving text, we will ‘re-train’ their brain to see text that stays still, for example.

How long this takes varies from person to person. For some children, the issue is resolved in a couple of sessions, for others it can take 5 or 6. Some children need multiple short sessions, others do better with less, longer ones. I tailor the programme to reflect your child’s specific needs in order to make sure they get the best results and enjoy the sessions at the same time.

For this reason, I can’t quantify how long part one will take for your child. On average it’s 2-4 sessions. What I can do is promise that I will continue working with them for as long as is required in this phase until we have found and resolved the processing issue that is holding them back.

Part 2: Integration

Once the main issue is dealt with, it’s time to make sure your child has a solid foundation for literacy. Because of the processing issue(s) that previously held them back, they might have ‘missed’ some basic elements needed to really understand how to read, write and spell.  If that’s the case, I’ll work with them to fill in these missing pieces.

Another aspect of dealing with dyslexia can be emotional. Confidence and self-esteem can be low if a child has struggled for a long time. If this is the case for your child, I’ll work with them to get rid of their negative beliefs and install a new, positive view of themselves.

Every person is unique, so it’s impossible to know exactly how this journey will unfold. As I learn more about your child, I’ll tailor the sessions to make sure they have a positive, transformational experience.

This ongoing journey stretches over either 6 x 30-minute sessions or 4 longer ones each week, depending on what’s best for your child and the way they learn.

Louise has superpowers, there is no other way to describe what she has done for my son. Approachable, informative, intuitive, an expert in her field and creative skills. She has managed to achieve what we thought was impossible. Would recommend her a million times over.

My son is 13 and had developed a fear of reading, he just seemed to so be repulsed at the thought and had been like it for many years. It was holding him back in other areas especially the older he was becoming.

Louise stuck with him while he struggled and showed him ways to help, she built his confidence and by the end of our sessions he had read an entire book and was looking forward to beginning the next one. It was a total transformation, far exceeding our expectations.

Thank you so, so much Louise

“Our youngest boy, Seth, has just turned 10 and has always really struggled with reading and writing.  He’s dyslexic and we now also have a Meares-Irlen syndrome diagnosis.

Previous attempts to help Seth with reading usually resulted in temper tantrums, tears and exhaustion for all parties.  Progress at school had pretty much stopped, with Seth refusing to take part in group reading activities and all areas of schoolwork and behaviour were suffering.

We first discussed working with Lou after meeting in a social setting, with Lou being sure she could offer some help to Seth.  I was sceptical at first, as Seth has never been receptive to additional help as he doesn’t want to be “different” from his classmates.  Some of the methods seemed a bit “out there” for me, with Seth creating an imaginary chameleon that could magically stop the letters moving about on the page.

Now, after working with Lou, Seth’s progress has been amazing.  He’s reading with me every night (books of his choosing with us sharing the reading). His confidence with reading has been the biggest change.  He isn’t scared to have a go now, whereas before a full page of text would have been too intimidating.

It’s made such a difference to Seth that it actually has brough tears to my eyes.  I’m so happy that a whole new world had been opened up for him. Seth’s behaviour at school has improved and we are now looking forward to Seth catching up with his classmates, as he is very bright and has a real thirst for knowledge.

Lou’s work with Seth has given him enough of a leg up to get out of the rut he was in.  She listened to him and took the time to understand where he was struggling and introduced techniques to overcome the problems.  He still has a long way to go, but now he is embracing the learning, it means that he can make progress every day at home and at school.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Lou to families that are facing issues with dyslexia and other learning issues.”
